A record-breaking donation of unwanted clothes for those in need at SmVaK Ostrava

In the post-Christmas season, the water company employees managed to collect a record-breaking 870 kilogrammes of clothes. They will be sold in charity shops to help people in need

Ostrava – 30 January 2020 – In the five working days from 13 to 17 January, the employees of Severomoravské vodovody a kanalizace Ostrava collected record-breaking quantities of clothes and other small items such as toys, small electronical devices, sports goods and crockery. What some people do not need anymore, others may find useful and thus help someone else in need. The collected items will now be sent to second hand charity shops run by the non-profit organization Moment Česká republika who is using the proceeds from sales to support, for example, the Ondrášek mobile hospice care, the Žebřík day hospital, children in Africa via the Bikes for Africa project or the Early Care Company assisting families with handicapped children.

“When we organized the donations for the first time four years ago, I was very surprised to see the number of our employees engaged and the number of items they brought in that we may find useless but that can help to ease someone else’s life. I was even more pleased to see that my colleagues continue to show they have hearts in the right place and they are not indifferent to the fate of other people. While we have collected almost 400 kilogrammes the first year, last year we got to 570 kilogrammes and this year’s number of 869 kilogrammes is really generous. As Moment ČR says, it is one of the most successful donation projects they have ever organized. These seemingly small and gradual steps also help to improve the quality of life of people in need who were quite often not lucky enough in life as most of us are,” says Anatol Pšenička, CEO of SmVaK Ostrava.

When managing its second hand shops, MOMENT accentuates volunteering and community engagement. MOMENT gradually expands its network with six shops currently open in Ostrava (two respectively in the city centre and in Poruba and one each in Mariánské Hory and Hrabůvka). Other shops can be found in Frýdek-Místek, Karviná and Prague.
Last year, they received donations from 282 companies who donated a total of 54 tonnes of clothes. After operational expenses have been deducted, the supported non-profit entities obtained CZK 1.34 million.
