Severomoravské vodovody a kanalizace Ostrava a. s. is the largest water supply company in the Moravian-Silesian region and has been among leaders for a long time now in the water supply market of the Czech Republic. Its core business is production and supply of drinking water as well as discharge and treatment of  wastewater.

It is among leaders in water business in the Czech Republic and keeps its position among the leading businesses in the Moravian-Silesian Region. SmVaK Ostrava introduced the integrated management system which has been proved by the ISO certificates. It is a part of the strong international group and wants to rank among the top water businesses in the Central and East Europe.

 

Territory of operation

SmVaK Ostrava operates mostly in the districts of Frýdek-Místek, Karviná, Nový Jičín, and Opava, with water also being delivered as per contract to the cities of Ostrava, Hlučín, Studénka, and other small towns.

SmVaK Ostrava supplies the drinking water for more than 708,000 people through 143,000 service pipes (total length: 770 km). It also operates 77 wastewater treatment plants with the total capacity of  263,997 m3 per day (population equivalent: 962,466).

Drinking water from SmVaK Ostrava’s water treatment plants is supplied, through third-party water companies, to the border area with Poland (Jastrzębie-Zdrój) and a part of the Olomouc region (including Hranice na Moravě, Lipník nad Bečvou, and Přerov).

 

History

Severomoravské vodovody a kanalizace Ostrava a.s. was founded in 1992 as a joint-stock company. The majority of shares was owned by the municipalities from the Moravian-Silesian Region. The shareholding structure has changed several times.
 

In 2018 the structure of stakeholders changed:  MIT INFRAESTRUCTURE EUROPE LIMITED sold its 49% share in business to FCC Aqualia S. A. which became the owner of 99.9999% in Aqualia Czech S. L., while the remaining 0.0001% is owned by Aqualia Intech, S. A.

SmVaK Ostrava is a part of the group controlled by FOMENTO DE CONSTRUCCIONES Y CONTRATAS, S.A.

 

Objects of business

The core business is production and supply of drinking water as well as discharge and treatment of  wastewater. 95 % of drinking water is produced from central resources managed by Povodí Odry (the river basin authority) in three main water treatment plants in the Ostrava Area Water Network Those water treatment plants are located in Podhradí u Vítkova, Nová Ves u Frýdlantu nad Ostravicí and  Vyšní Lhoty near Frýdek-Místek. Raw water is taken from the Kružberk Dam in the foothills of the Jeseníky Mountains, and the Šance Dam and Morávka Dam in the Beskydy Mountains. Drinking water is also supplied for towns with local sources of water.

SmVaK Ostrava operates sewage systems in 80 towns. The length of the sewage system is 1,977 km. More than 480,000 people are connected to the SmVaK Ostrava’s sewage system. SmVaK Ostrava operates 77 wastewater treatment plants with the total capacity of  263,997 m3 (the equivalent population: 962,466).
