Production and quality of drinking water are monitored in line with laws in force with the frequency and scope necessary for validation of correctness of the technology processes. Quality of the drinking water is monitored using samples and laboratory analyses. Continuous analyses are carried out in order to check compliance with hygiene limits which are defined in the Regulation No. 252/2004 Coll. that sets forth the hygiene requirements for drinking water, warm water and frequency and scope of quality checks. Before the water treatment, raw water is taken from the source and analysed. Samples are also taken during and after the water treatment. Frequency and extent of such analyses depend on the volume of produced water and on the number of people who are supplied the water.

Legislative
Quality of drinking water in the Czech Republic is governed by Zákon o ochraně veřejného zdraví č. 258/2000 Sb. (v platném znění) and by applicable decrees (Decree č. 252/2004 Sb. pro pitnou vodu laying down potable water and warm water requirements with respect to health, and regulating frequency and scope of drinking water analyses). These regulations are based on requirements of the EU Council Directive 98/83/EC on the quality of water intended for human consumption.
Health requirement and quality of drinking water need to be compliant with health limits applicable to microbiological, biological, physical, chemical, and organoleptic indicators (the appearance and smell).
Analysis results for the drinking water samples taken from the water supply network are regularly sent, through the online application PiVo, to the Public Health Office of the Moravian-Silesian Region with its registered office in Ostrava. This authority is also in charge of independent checks of quality of water supplied by SmVaK Ostrava.
The Act No. 252/2000 Coll. (3) (c) as amended requires that operating rules should be prepared for each site where SmVaK Ostrava provides its services. Such operating rules should include, among others, the risk assessment and risk management. If major risks had been identified, corrective measures are taken. All operating rules are approved by the Public Health Authority of the Moravian-Silesian Region with the registered office in Ostrava. The operating rules need to be updated, at the latest, every six years after approval.
